Restaurant: Blink
Cuisine: French/fusion
City: Calgary

So my mother had a gift certificate for Blink so we decided to just try it. I have been here before, however it was with quite a large group so I was giving it the benefit of the doubt for it not being the most excellent food ever… Nevertheless, I was let down; I swear I was going in with an open mind.

Lets see my albacore tuna mmm when I had my first bite it was borderline salty but as I kept eating it, it was all right. I found the elderberries almost overpowering the dish? I don’t really know my feelings towards this dish but it is leaning more to the negative side. It didn’t seem like the flavours meshed well together? (That’s what I get for not ordering wine xD). It just sounded better on paper.

My mother got the special of the day which was a sea bass.. That was a lot better for me the fish had a good crunchy skin to it but the fish itself wasn’t dry so that was nice.

Ack now to the dessert. I wanted a dessert that was familiar to my mom and also something she hasn’t heard of. So we decided on a “warm” apple tart with vanilla ice cream and the valrhona chocolate semifreddo.

First of all the apple tart ugh….. Severely disappointed. It was legitimately just a flat piece of thing. For 10 bucks.. Which was just frickin ridiculous. It was so flat with severely thin apples and by the time it came to us… It was not warm and the crust was just soggy and just not enjoyable to eat to say the least. The ice cream was good though…

The semifreddo itself was nice… The beignet I didn’t really enjoy =|… At all. Didn’t really do anything for it plus it was cold and kinda staleish? Meh. I probably won’t be coming back till the next menu change? I don’t know =\

Boxwood Cafe

City: Calgary
Cuisine: Local fresh food

Located in the lovely Central Memorial Park is where you will find this lovely restaurant. It is a small quaint spot with super friendly service and an awesome view of the park and a lot of natural light that comes through the windows (awesome for pictures xD).

So the original plan was to get the “Sunday Supper” which was a set menu for cheap, however, the Chef was on his day off so they didn’t have it this week T.T. Nevertheless, we settled with the byow no corkage fee and scanned through the menu.

For appies, we decided on the red lentil hummus and the potted Lois lake trout. The hummus was just delicious and addicting and throughout the meal, I pretty much put it on everything. The trout was all right, the only problem was the veg chips were quite thin so when you try and spread some of the fish on there to stick, it would break.

For the mains, we got the seared albacore tuna and the drive view farm lamb leg. The tuna was fantabulous!!!! It just melted in your mouth and it came with some pieces of lettuce and chickpeas which made it extra yummy! The lamb was moist and delish. Lastly for a side, we got the roasted cauliflower which I enjoyed as well!

The wine we brought was pretty delish! We were going to settle on the Gotham Shiraz…. Just cause it had Gotham on it LOL but we ended up getting the cupcake red velvet wine. It had some body to it but it is definitely on the sweeter and fruitier side.

The meal left me satisfied and full but not the feeling of nastiness and greasiness which was an added bonus! As you can see, we had an all out battle for the bill… But I surrendered in the end xD. Definitely recommend this place!
